How Does an Online Ruler Work?

Every screen has a pixel density measured in DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch). By knowing how many pixels equal one inch, we can draw a ruler at exactly the right scale. Calibrating Your Screen Ruler

For maximum accuracy, calibrate using an object with a known physical size. A standard credit card is the most convenient — it measures exactly 85.6mm (3.37 inches) wide per the ISO/IEC 7810 standard. Place the card against your screen, open the Calibrate panel, select "Credit Card", and drag the slider until the ruler width matches your card exactly. Your DPI setting is saved in your browser for all future visits.
