How Screen Measurement Works
A screen ruler does not magically know the physical size of your display. It works by:
- Detecting your screen’s DPI (dots per inch) — the number of physical pixels per inch of your actual screen.
- Mapping pixel counts to physical units. If your screen is 96 DPI, then 96 pixels = 1 inch = 25.4 mm.
- Drawing tick marks at intervals that correspond to real-world measurements at your screen’s DPI.
The challenge: DPI varies between devices. A laptop might be 96 DPI, a phone might be 300+ DPI, and a 4K monitor might be 163 DPI. Using the wrong DPI drastically throws off measurements.
Calibrating for Perfect Accuracy
If the default DPI does not match your screen, calibration is essential. Our ruler includes a calibration tool that uses objects with known physical sizes:

How to Calibrate
- Place the physical object (like a credit card) against your screen.
- Drag the calibration slider until the on-screen ruler matches the object’s known width.
- Your calibration is saved in browser storage. You will not need to recalibrate unless you switch devices.
Once calibrated, the ruler becomes accurate to within approximately ±1 mm — matching a physical ruler.
Ruler Modes: L-Shape, Horizontal, Vertical
Our online ruler offers three display modes for different measuring tasks:
- Corner (L-Shape): Shows both horizontal and vertical rulers simultaneously — ideal for measuring rectangular objects or photos.
- Horizontal Only: A single horizontal ruler across your screen — best for measuring width.

Common Measuring Scenarios
Measure a Photo for a Frame
Place the photo against your screen, calibrate the ruler with a credit card, and measure width and height. You will know exactly what frame size to buy.
Check Jewelry or Component Size Online
If a product listing says “25 mm diameter,” switch the ruler to mm mode and see exactly how large that is on your screen. This reduces returns from misjudged sizes.
Measure Small DIY Parts
Screws, bolts, washers — calibrate once and measure quickly without hunting for your toolbox ruler.
Size Wire or Cable Thickness
Lay the cable across the screen (or hold it against it) and check its thickness in mm. Useful for identifying gauge when ordering replacement parts.
Mobile and Tablet Support
